ENNOVATE LAB

Ogbomoso, Nigeria

The Business

Ennovate Lab, founded November 2017, is an innovation hub and a startup foundry operating out of Ogbomoso, Nigeria. Ennovate Lab seeks to decentralize access to educational and economic opportunities for the vast pool of talents that live, study or work in this underserved university community.

As an innovation hub, Ennovate Lab trains undergraduate and graduate students as well as young professionals with tech and entrepreneurial skills, provides them mentorship and advisory services, and connects the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) they lead to funding. The business also provides a coworking facility for greater ease for business operations. As a startup foundry, Ennovate Lab co-builds impact-driven startups with significant potential for scale across the edtech, healthtech, fintech and greentech industries.

Ennovate Lab also runs Qeola, a digital agency that supports local and global clients with software development, branding and digital marketing services. Children that Change the World (CTCTW), a non-profit that prepares children and teenagers in underserved communities with the higher order thinking skills they need to succeed in the 21st century, is a labor of love that has impacted tens of thousands of students in Ogbomoso and neighboring cities.

MISSION

Ennovate Lab is committed to seeing resilient innovation ecosystems emerge in underserved university communities across Sub-Saharan Africa. 60% of Africa's population is presently made up of youths below 25 (citiesalliance.org) and this will translate to about 1 billion youths below 25 by 2050 (Mariama Sow; brookings.edu). Coupled with the fact that Africa remains the only continent with a growing youth population, Africa is the future if this youthful strength is well harnessed. On the converse, it could be a disaster waiting to happen if there are no intentional plans in place to create economic safety nets through relevant training, gainful employment and abundant opportunities to thrive.

Ennovate Lab works daily to see the “wilderness” of our community become a fruitful field, and the fruitful field become a forest through the transforming power of the Gospel of peace. God’s shalom is the ultimate guardrail and end for all that Ennovate does. Beyond Ogbomoso, with God's wisdom, love and power, Ennovate Lab wants to transform communities into all that God wants to see in them. Ennovate is beginning to see significant results, and when thinking about the organization’s goals in Ogbomoso, keeps in mind Nathaniel's guileless question, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Ennovate plans to respond with the same quiet assurance as Philip: “Come and see.”

Faith/Leadership

JD sees his business as an opportunity to partner with God in His redemptive work on earth. JD’s singular desire is to keep growing in yielding to the Holy Spirit, to will and to do of His good pleasure.

On September 28, 2005, through the testimony of an evangelist who preached powerfully of his encounter with the Lord Jesus and His saving grace, God reached out to JD and broke through his heart of sin and rebellion. Jesus owned all of JD’s heart from that day onwards, and he has been committed to doing His will ever since. One of the key revelations that has greatly helped JD on this journey of faith is his realization that it is no longer JD who lives, but Christ who lives in JD. As such, when the Lord told JD it was time to return to the marketplace after years of missionary labors in 2016, his doubts were dissolved.

A phrase by Eugene Peterson, “A long obedience in the same direction,” defines how JD has come to ultimately see his work in the marketplace. Nigeria is presently experiencing a dearth of a true theology of work, and as such believers are yet to fully come into the beauty of God’s redemptive work in the marketplace; however, JD believes that his work at Ennovate Lab is effectively positioning him to be a voice for the Lord in this regard in Nigeria.
